  • Dog in a Basket on a Bike

Dog in a basket, on a bicycle.  That is all.

  • Doggles

While I recover from another weekend, I thought I would post the most appropriate photo taken by Michael while waiting at traffic lights, that sums up the weekend … like he says, in Taipei, you don’t need to go looking for crazy things, the crazy things come to you.

More photos on the way soon.

Doggles. My new word. And happy birthday to me!

  • Fat Cat

DaTou … “get me a beer”

DaTou , our wife-beating house cat, sits and watches TV

Update: Datou is renamed ‘Fatou’ and now sports extra artwork by Abe!

    Brrrrp!

  • Hello Kitty

Sorry, some entirely gratuitous photos of our two house cats, DaTou and Tripod. I think this is the beginning of the end.

Tripod, who is simply a ball of delightful cuteness

… and then there is DaTou, dark lord of the cat underworld.

He displays rodent-like tendencies, including biting his way into boxes, creating almost perfectly circular holes along the way. Deeply strange.

And there he sits, plotting his revenge…

  • Spotted

I need to kick start my blogging again so the best way to do this is to simply upload some photos. So, here are some amusing things that I have seen on my travels of late.

A labrador seen near Danshui – shaved clean of any dignity

Dad bought this in Hong Kong … amazing

On the way home, I snatched this photo of a guy who could hardly turn he had so much foam loaded onto his scooter

One of the local tradesmen specialises in brooms and hats and taps and bowls. As you begin to tune into Chinese you begin to hear the sounds of ‘buo li’ (glass) and other household items blairing (is that a new verb?) out of pre-recorded loud-hailers

Taiwanese people like food. Taiwanese people like weapons. Taiwanese people like food shaped like weapons. (stretching the truth for the benefit of the blog)

  • The Office Dogs

Max is sadly so hilarious to look at in the office today after his fight with Gi-Li that I had to take photos. He is more or less addicted to licking things – especially my trousers, for some reason – so this has rather deprived him of his primary past-time. Gi-Li, looks on looking rather guilty. I’ll capture some pictures of the rather well-endowed Poky this week. You will not believe your eyes.

Max, looking a bit sorry for himself

    “Who? – Me?!”

  • DEM – The New Office

Life is changing quickly for me. A new apartment and a new job are two significant differences in my life, that should both bring some good benefits. The new office certainly stimulating and I am really looking forward to my job developing over the coming weeks. For now, I should introduce to Prada – the office bitch.

  • Pigs Might Hike

I had a very pleasant walk today with Anke, Lars and Alex (Aussie dude). We planned for a 6K hike, which was slightly waylaid due to ignoring the wrong things in the hiking book, but the result was a splendid wee series of random events that made us all laugh over the Pizza in the evening.

The star of the show was certainly Ah Fu – the Chinese pig that thought he was a dog. He was the coolest thing to be walking with and much calmer than most dogs, and had the amusing habit of eating the plants as he went his oinking way. A definite hit with the other walkers, a source of total bemusement to the other dogs (“hey, you are supposed to be dinner!”) and was truly full of character.

A loyal pig, it really liked walking between its owner’s legs

We stumbled across a few amusing things. The Taiwanese are masterful at turning public spaces into community spaces. You can see what I mean here – at a break in the path we found a small medicine cabinet with some supplies in it, and alongside it were tethered 3 pots of various balms and lotions – one of which was Tiger Balm.

Alex and Anke dig the whiffs

As a hilarious post-script to the walk, we came up against an army check point, complete with guns, guards and bunkers. We wondered how to get past or around it when the station commander came storming out claiming we were on army property, and ‘what were we doing there?!’ Somehow, we had breached the defences of the back door to the base so we actually came to the gate from the wrong direction … Taiwan eh! We gave the guards a quick nod, but on second glance we could see them laughing as well, in on the joke.

  • Feline Fine

My cat-related theme is continuing this week, it seems. Whilst shopping for blinky techno things I got sidetracked by this bag that someone was carrying … and it had a cat in it (hard to appreciate, I know). They were of course very proud of their little moggy, though I am not sure what the cat thought…

    Especially for Bianca…

  • Street Walking

Feeling slightly worse for wear from the previous night, I met up with Lorenzo. He was in a very relaxed mood, so we decided to street drink our way across some new parts of town. It is kind of like skateboarding, but with beer. The idea is that you save lots of money that can be spent on food and blinking products, you see more and in general strange things happen.

This time we went to the Shanglian area near to Main Station and had a look around. This is more or less the old area of town and it has an amazing character too it – more like Hong Kong, or perhaps a littl feel of NYC, Milan or London. Anyway, a bit more run down and relaxed with itself, rather than inmost places that are straining to be something higher class. We got some great chat off the street vendors and and some of the girls on clothes stalls.

    Astonishing old bike

Evil cat, mounted in a harness on this lady – apparently she goes out to the night market every night with it.
