  • Markus Leaves

    Markus has left Taiwan!

Horror of horrors. The rechtsfahrer actually did it!

It’s sad to see him leave of course, but I also know that there will be one or two opportunities in the future to make some new stories… but for now, this guy was there for some of the best of mine on this island.

    Ride 2 Live

The last one. But a good one!

  • Ride 2 Live…

After rather too much alcohol from the night before showing the British design delegation Shilin nightmarket, I got up early and met up with the team of riders from Asus as they attempted the ascent up the deadly Yangming Mountain.

As is often the case in Taiwan, there are trends in the air … and in this case the trend is small-wheel bikes. Folding bikes. Moultons. Bromptons. All totally unsuitable for the climb, and all completely, immaculately clean.

None the less – a great ride, and I had the pleasure to show off the opening trail of the Graveyard mountain bike run to Markus. With the cool, sunny weather, it was a fantastic chance to say goodbye!

  • Rooftop Live

With Markus leaving Taiwan there are a few activities that we need to clear out of the way before he is granted access to the United States, we have not been the bessst at meeting up, but in the last few days we have made some pretty serious effort to meet up and redress the balance.

I am still a bit groggy from the weekend and lack of sleep, but we had an absolute stormer of a night watching 1976 on the roof of Eslite bookstore. Fighting the elements, we enjoyed a good show, and capped it with one of the funniest moments of Taiwan in months. More to tell later on that one, in case it ruins any surprises in the near future.

  • Prince

Seeing Prince live has sat around in my Things To Do In Life list for years and years, and I finally caught up with the wee scoundrel at the Millenium Dome in London last Thursday with Phil. That boy knows how to entertain, I can tell you, and played a frenetic 36-song set that included many of the classics… and one song with Elton!

It was quite funny sitting in the new arena looking at the aged rocker belt out the song, and look back at the slightly tragic celebrities in Taiwan that I occasionally encounter and think … ‘what’s so different?’

Purple Rain, in a shot stolen on my camphone (people were being chucked out for taking photos!) … to be fair though, the guy is giving away the album for free, so it is hardly surprising that he is being paranoid about the in-show copyright.

The encore after the encore, after the lights came up… quite a treat, but we did miss out on the aftershow, where he played some vintage Led-Zep… denied!

  • Rich Finally Leaves

The Roc has a habit of pulling back in, and after quite a bit of procrastinating, Rich is now off to explore fresh pastures in Shanghai, and then Indonesia. Phew!

  • Raw Thursdays

Thursdays has become a regular eating session amongst my friends and I. In tribute to Nick’s very particular stomaxh problem, where he cannot eat cooked food, we have labelled these weekly feasts ‘Raw Thursdays’. Just a bunch of guys eating raw food, basically.

It’s quite interesting and a challenge to find food that Nick can partake in. Sashimi figures highly in our menu, and this week we headed to one of my favourite little laneside eateries near 101. Excellent ambience at night time, topped off as it is by 101 poking up at the end of the street.

Sadly, the raw food extended into a raw head the next morning, the result of rather too much sake. But that’s just a demonstration of the lengths we go to to appease Nick’s belly.

  • Scooter Justice

Rich is back in town, and he has not ridden a scooter since December. It is such a fantastic reminder of just how much fun piloting these things is – especially when the daily routine of getting to work in the rain takes its toll.

A great weekend was certainly had by all – road trip, big night out and long exhaustive conversations well into the night with earth-shakingly important conclusions – if you could just rememember what the question was.

  • Rich – The Return

It’s old news, but the flip side to this international lifestyle or galavanting off to Korea and Japan for the weekend is that friends tend to do the same and galavant off for good. I have had several close friends do this, but when Rich left at Christmas it really left rather a big hole.

It was with this in mind that I was particularly looking forward to him coming back to wrap up his life before heading off for pastures bright and shiny. I took the day off on Friday and we planned (well, I say, plan – it mostly involved just waking up) and rode off around the north of the island and chilling at the beach, shooting several months of breeze that had been lacking.

  • Korea

Other countries in Asia – Japan, Hong Kong and China – I had already developed a relatively strong impression for well before I moved out East. Korea, on the other hand, was a place for which my perception has definitely been influenced by my Taiwanese compatriots. That is certainly not to say it is a well-formed and balanced opinion, since it is mainly based on A. the spicy food in the restaurants here B. the Korean soap operas that are all the rage here, and C. gossip from Taiwanese girls that all Korean girls have had plastic surgery.

Thankfully, except for the spicy food, all my perceptions were readily challenged by what I experienced!

One of the main reasons I wanted to head out here was that Daniel Fertig, one of neighbours while growing up, had moved here with his wife Michelle and kids Anna and Sumi. I had not really ever had a chance to chat properly to Michelle and Dan and I have plotted pretty divergent courses up to this point that we ended up on the same side of the world together. It sounds strange, but it is nice to know that someone else is going through some of the same things that I am, and that my parents and his parents can talk about our strange stories.

One thing I liked about Korean buildings is they seemed to use much more colour than in Taiwan or certainly Japan; though I suspect it might be because they repaint regularly.
